Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is Orofacial Myology limited to adults?

A: No. Sophia has experience working with children and adults of all ages. Her warm and friendly nature makes myology pleasant for everyone.

Q: What treatments are available? And is it painful?

A: Individualised care is provided to each patient. Because of the nature of myology and specialisation in the mouth, tongue, lips, and facial musculature, we often work with all ages including infants and children! Treatment is designed to be fun, non-painful and relatively easy to follow and do. Patients may feel a bit of discomfort at first when doing the exercises as they are working and training muscles that have otherwise not been properly trained in the past, but like any muscle in our body, with proper exercising and training of the muscle groups, they strengthen and become more comfortable with the exercises.

Q. Can babies, and small children benefit from orofacial myology?

A: Yes. Tongue-tied babies may require a frenectomy where the connecting tissue under the tongue needs to be released to free the tongue. We can provide muscle training and stretching assistance both before and after the surgery. Dentists refer children to a myologist for problems with tongue placement which can cause sleep apnea or misaligned teeth. Many conditions are treated with orofacial myology. Click here for a list of common conditions that we treat.

Q: Does Sophia use dental appliances to help?

A: Myo generally does not require appliances but in some circumstances there may be a necessary appliance that may be used in conjunction with therapy, but generally myo is done without appliances.

Myo programs planned in conjunction with those already in appliances, ortho or TMJD appliance therapy is common and help with better results and compliance rate of wearing certain appliances with more balanced muscles, properly training oral and facial muscle rest postures to close upon the appliances and breathe better.

Procedures are done without appliances. But depending on the case, some individuals may require a dental appliance before or aftercare to assist with any further dental problems that may persist. The progress of myology and results are discussed as well as their referrals and any future referring practitioners that may be required to pursue optimal overall health for the individual throughout and the following care.

Sophia is trained and involved in educating candidates about Myobrace, Myofunctional Orthodontics. Myobraces are sized, prefabricated dental appliances that assist myofunctional habit correction, TMJ, sleep disorders and tooth positioning. We work with dentists who may also be providers of Myobrace for anyone who may benefit from this treatment option.
